When the local municipal water system is unable to supply enough pressure to satisfy the hydraulic requirements of the fire sprinkler system, fire pumps are needed. This usually happens in towering buildings, such high-rise structures, or in systems that require a lot of water to circulate, like storage warehouses. If the water supply for the sprinkler system comes from a water storage tank, fire pumps are also required. Diesel engines or electric motors power fire pumps. A pump with an electric motor may use a device known as a transfer switch, which switches power to an emergency generator in the event of a power outage, if the local building code calls for power independent of the local electric power grid. When the fire sprinkler system's pressure falls below a certain point, the fire pump activates. When one or more fire sprinklers are turned on, or when additional firefighting connections are opened, the pressure in the sprinkler system drops considerably.
